I am honored to be part of the First National Building in Olean's new artist-in- residency program with the support of ChaShaMa and TriCounty Arts Council until December 2024.
The space is divided into 3 areas between two floors. The area sprawls over 7,110 square feet. The first floor consists of a large open space that housed the main part of the bank back when it was first built in 1915. There are vaults all over the building, which is fun to use as an imagination station. For the time being this area acts as a gallery and performance space. Three movable walls were provided by ChaShaMa to facilitate exhibitions of 2D works.
The Second floor, where I assume the offices and administration for the bank were, has been converted into studio space for 6 artists, me being one. There is a large studio and a smaller one (where I am).
The point, though, is that I am here because at first I was not going to apply. I reluctantly applied thinking that I have my own space at home to paint. But, I am so glad I did because now that I have the space it has given me the motivation to actually paint, to meet new people, and it gives me an outlet to share my work! What could be better than sharing work as an artist? Isn't that the point?
I am grateful every time I use my key fob to enter the building. It is exciting to enter the sacred space dedicated to creativity. I feel privileged to have the access.
I love spending time in the studio with the natural light. I love peeking out the window and seeing the traffic go by, being somehow a part of it all, yet apart from it all. I enjoyed putting down the paper and tarp to protect the floors, setting up my easel (which was my grandmothers), and bringing my paints and brushes to prep for work.
I was excited to bring canvas, and brand-new stretcher bars, and then actually stretch the canvas and with the help of a friend get the canvas securely fastened. From there I got to paint! So yeah, I have so much gratitude.
Last week, I visited and worked in the studio 3 times and one time on Sunday (the ambiguous day that can be considered part of either week). The point is though that I am going, I am working, and I am channeling my energy in positive and creative ways.
If you are in the Olean area, come visit open studio hours weekly
10-4 Tuesdays & Wednesdays, 3-7 Thursdays, and 10-4 Saturdays. You might catch me working or hanging out, but you'll definitely see my work.
Special event with music August 6 at 6:30.
Congrats! Can't wait to stop by and check things out!
